I’ll be hosting a Japanese cultural experience on Airbnb!

Japanese culture

I love Airbnb so much that when I travel abroad, I decide where to stay based on Airbnb listings, and I even plan my travel schedule around the dates of Airbnb Experience activities.

I’ve always wanted to host on Airbnb myself, and after several years of dreaming, buying my own home has started to make this dream seem more like a reality.

In this blog, I want to document my journey to becoming a host. I hope that when you come to Japan, you’ll want to join one of my activities!

I’ll be hosting activities that offer Japanese culture.

I want to provide enjoyment to my guests in my area of expertise! The first thing that came to my mind was manga-style illustrations.

As a child, my dream was to become a manga artist. In middle school, I spent most of my time at home drawing manga in my room.

Since planning to host an activity on Airbnb about two years ago, I’ve been relearning how to use G pens and screentones, and now I can draw beautiful illustrations.

I think it would be wonderful to offer people who visit my home an experience similar to that of a Japanese manga artist using my skills in drawing manga-style illustrations! You start with a pencil sketch and then trace it with ink. It’s very simple, and you can complete a professional-looking piece with screentones and manga submission manuscript paper.

I can’t let my guests go hungry during the activity, so I’d like to prepare Japanese snacks, juices, my favorite plum wine, Japanese wine, beer, and more. I plan to have two tables in the living room: one as a workspace for drawing manga-style illustrations and another loaded with snacks, alcoholic beverages, and juices! It’s definitely going to be a fun activity!

Let’s all have lunch together after drawing manga-style illustrations!

For a lunch that feels very Japanese, should it be curry rice, fried chicken, or omelet rice? I can make all of them deliciously, so if I prepare some things in advance, I should be able to provide a smooth lunch by moving back and forth to the kitchen during the middle of the activity!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful for all the guests to gather around the dining table and enjoy a lot of Japanese flavors?

For the ideal activity, what I’m working on now

I was born and raised in Japan. The biggest challenge of living in Japan for me is not being able to learn English well. It’s been a few years since I started studying English, but to be honest, I still get nervous when talking to people from overseas.

To address this, in addition to continuing English lessons, I’m trying something new on my Instagram and YouTube: I’m attempting to speak in front of the camera without a script for a bit. My English isn’t very good yet, but I’ll be updating my journey to hosting activities through videos as well, so please check out my social media too.

I bought a house!

With marriage as the occasion, we purchased a second-hand property in Yokohama, which is easily accessible from Tokyo. It’s a bit of an old house, but I absolutely love its beautiful interior that makes you feel the essence of Japan. There’s a Japanese-style room, known as a tea room, designed specifically for conducting tea ceremonies, and I’m planning to use it to host manga illustration experience activities. Before moving in, we plan to renovate the interior, and I’m thinking of posting the process as a blog!

Until I get settled into our new home and life there becomes stable, I want to try my hand at being a guide in tourist spots on Airbnb!

As a step towards that goal, I’ve been considering hosting experiences on Airbnb, and what I’m planning right now is to attempt guiding tours in Enoshima, a well-known tourist destination in Kanagawa Prefecture where I live.

It’s still going to take some time for preparation, but I’m steadily making progress towards my goal. I’ll continue updating my blog, so I’d be happy if you could read it.
